Travis and his partner Nelson just wanted to win a race and earn some quick cash, maybe a little notoriety. That was before they flew right into the heart of a battle between the two main factions of humanity, the Xigen and HumaniX. Now caught up in a complicated web of politics, shadowy manipulations, and open warfare, Nelson and Travis are poised to decide the fate of the entire human race. And they've no idea who, if anyone, will survive...

Abstract of Story: -
They came in my dreams more frequently now as I slept in my bed night after night. I don't know who or what they are, but what I do know is they're no zombies, ghosts or creatures from another realm. They were beings that possessed the water and I could not keep them away no matter how hard I tried. They always seemed to sneak in through any crack or open faucet. But one thing I know for sure is that they hated the pink light. It kept them away, a shadow of their former self.

It all started when my brother and me ventured to Minors Farm, which was situated in the middle of the countryside. Settled in the sea of green, this old derelict place had been the target of local gypsies and builders, who disposed of their day's rubbish over the land. A lone graveyard stood next to the farm and it too was the target of these local pests.

An elderly man used to own the farm and he kept an assortment of animals ranging from sheep to cows. With a team of dedicated assistants, the farmer looked after the surrounding land and took additional care of the local graveyard. But that all changed when a tight-fisted businessman took over the lease of the land. His persistent need for rent and harassment throughout the years finally saw the place abandoned.

Now, we stood at the gates of this ill-begotten place, I could only wondered at how beautiful this place used to be.

Minor's farm was made out of three large structures, two shacks and an old Victorian house that had stood the test of time. The farm would have stood for hundreds of years until the businessman stripped the Roman tiles off the roofs and sold them for profit. Left unprotected, the elements tore away at the buildings, causing them to collapse.

Info: -
On the dawn of a new age for mankind, one young woman discovers her passion for the sky, unlike anything she's experienced before. But the journey to discovering her dream faces hardship by the interference of her father, the colony ruler. With the help of her saviour, she embarks on an incredible journey to defy her father and ultimately face mankind's biggest enemy, the Pagers.

Follow Sonya in her quest as Shane Ward brings you another fantastic new story.

Quote

Abstract of Story: -
A new world waited for us and I was filled with mixed feelings about leaving Earth and all my friends. I studied about the first human to set foot on Lio and I would follow in his footsteps, as did hundreds of hopeful colonists.

With the chance to colonise Lio, my family uprooted themselves from Earth and took to the skies in search of new adventures.

It wasn't the need to leave a used up world, or escape a civilization that was on the brink of war. Earth was not perfect, but our civilization had learned to live with each other and treat our planet with respect, so why did we head for the vast openness of space?

The answer was simple. We yearned to explore the unknown; we wanted a fresh new start in a world. We wanted to see if we could pass on our human ingenuity and passion without spreading the seed of hate.

By the time we left Earth, I, Sonya was not a happy girl. The shuttle took off before I could comprehend the choices my family had made. The image of our beautiful world slowly disappeared into the darkness and the starry sky turned all blurry as we travelled faster than light.

I knew we were on our way and my family sat with big smiles and overexcited imaginations. They spoke about owning their own land and the opportunities that lay before them; they always spoke about this new world.

I was not the only child in this flight. Many families took to the sky on their way to Lio. Such a fitting name; I could have invented something better. But names were not on my mind; I mourned the friends I left behind.

*

I guess I was about eight years old at the time, going through school and enjoying every moment of it. My friends ranged from rowdy young bucks that got into trouble, to the shy adolescent girls that would peek around corners. I, on the other hand, was the adventurous type. I was the one with a goal, which slowly turned into a driving force that convinced me to leave Earth. But I was too young at the time to realize how much I would love this place.

As our human intelligence allowed us to adventure into the great unknown, we came upon an alien race that called themselves the Pagers.

We never knew what to make of these beings. On the first encounter, which stormed the papers and news services like a storm, the alien vessel sat in space and did nothing for days. I remember seeing it on view-screens back on Lio. Scientists, diplomats, and negotiators tried to communicate with the strange object that looked like a rock with an engine wedged to the top. Not the best design for a ship, but it was different nonetheless.

Then it backed away. No reason. It just moved away without any form of contact. As I continued to watch the moment unfold, I sensed something terrible about to happen.

I remained glued to the screen as the human vessel attempted to intercept it. This turned out to be a big mistake. The alien vessel opened fire, disintegrating our ship into a million pieces.

There was no warning or any need for that blunt attack. The highly skilled teams that had followed all the protocols set out for this kind of situation perished needlessly.  It appeared the aliens were in no mood for friendly negotiations and years later, the war began.

Abstract of Story: -
It was winter in London, calm clear skies, rooftops layered over by snow and vehicles crawling along the road, hoping to get to their destination without crashing into a tree. It was a typical Monday morning and for Ray, the start of a long dreary day.

With almost two years' bus driving experience under his belt, Ray was a skilled driver and that was apart from the other talents he possessed which would come in handy during the next couple of months. Because he was assessing the weather, Ray failed to notice his arch-enemy sitting in his office with a stick up his ass. The guy was named Dave. Ray tried hard not to cross his path because he was the type of person who nit-picked everything that was out of place. It was a shame, the garage used to be a nice place to work but it had became a war zone with mundane infractions the biggest weapon. Dave loved rules and he followed them to the letter.

A smooth start to the day always determined how the rest of Ray's shift was to go. He could relax or put up his defenses, depending on how things went within the first ten minutes. Being met by a six-foot obese man in a suit was not a good sign.

Info from there website: -
The Lorelei Signal is aweb based magazine dedicated to featuring strong female characters in Fantasy short stories.

This does not mean I don't want to see strong men either, balance is the key. I just don't want to see female characters who are weak, having to be constantly rescued, etc. Females in the story should have the same strength of character as their male counterparts and not be there as window dressing. This has been changing over the years in fantasy writing - the idea of the female character being nothing more than a sidekick, the princess to be rescued, etc has faded significantly. But, she still shows up occasionally.

The title of this magazine was taken from the Animated Star Trek episode by the same name. In that episode the men of the Enterprise fell under a siren song and it was Lt. Uhura who had to take command of the Enterprise. It was a pretty hokey set-up to finally get a female in the command chair of the original Enterprise, but at least she got there.

So tell us your fantasy stories, but remember you have to include a strong female character in an important role.

Abstract of Navigator: -
Endora Toinette stood before her reflection in the bathroom mirror, wondering if this was all life had installed for her. She had been born on her home world, Plaxes, and joined the academy to hone her natural skills in space flight. But she wanted more; she wanted freedom and a life away from the monsters that controlled this ship. But she could not do that. She was a Navigator.

Travelling through slipstream was dangerous and without a Navigator to guide them any ship ran the risk of running into a planet, asteroid or sun. The Plaxians’ had remedied this hazard by allowing one of their citizens to travel on alien ships and make instant changes to its flight path. With the capability to project their mind several light-years ahead of the vessel, they could see dangers and make the appropriate course change. In the two-thousand year history of using the Plaxians’, not one single starship succumbed to its doom.

Endora waved her hand over the sink and it began to fill with water. She made a cup with her gentle hands and washed the cool liquid over her soft face. She sighed as she felt the crystals of water trickled down her face and finally strolled over to the cabinet to pick up her headband. The gold leafed circlet, called the ‘Spirit of Wings,’ was a religious symbol for her race indicating she was a fully-fledged Navigator capable of guiding ships through slipstream. She looked at the pair of wings that symbolised flight and she slowly slipped the band into her purple hair, resting the wings above her ears. An emerald jewel heightened her abilities as it glowed faintly on her forehead.
